Cats Vs Dogs: Cats are Better

Okay here is Part 2, Happy Reading!
In today’s society there are many people who prefer cats over dogs and vice versa, but which one really is better? Well, that depends on who you ask! A lot of people prefer cats because they’re independent, affectionate, and don’t require constant attention from their owners.

They are easy to maintain and take care of which gives the cat owner more free time to do other things in life that could be more enjoyable than taking care of an animal all day long. Dogs on the other hand are considered man’s best friend.

Cats take up less space

I don’t know about you, but we have four big dogs in our house (two of our own, and two fosters) and they take up a lot of room – as do their giant dog beds! We have three cats too (one of our own and two rescues) and they don’t take up much space at all – other than the odd scratching post here and there. In fact, if it wasn’t for those, most days you wouldn’t even know they were here.

Cats are lower maintenance than dogs

Cats are lower maintenance. Unlike a dog, they don’t need be let outside to do their business at 4 am (can we ask why 4am is the preferred time to do this?) and they can use the litter box. Cats also groom themselves, which means you don’t have to bathe them, wipe their paws, and they don’t track mud into the house from outside. They often don’t need to visit the vet as often as a dog would need to either.

Cats don’t need to be taken on walks

One of the main reasons that cats are better than dogs is that they don’t need to be taken on walks. They don’t bring you their leash just as you get comfortable on the couch. If you have a lot on your plate, a busy schedule and you work long hours, cats don’t care – they can stay home alone without any issues.

Cats are independent

You are the centre of your dogs universe, but for a cat, they are the centre of their own universe. They don’t need you – they like you, they may want affection here and there (on their terms) but they don’t need you. They don’t follow you into the bathroom like a dog does. They are pretty happy planning their own day, living their own life, whereas dogs want to live your life with you.

Cats don’t need as much attention as dogs

As I write this my foster dog is nudging my arm for attention. My cats? I don’t even know where they are in the house. Dogs get their self-confidence from their owners affection and praise. When was the last time your cat was upset because you didn’t pet them or give them praise? I don’t know about you, but our cats don’t care what we think about them, or anything for that matter.

Cats can be left alone for longer periods of time

Cats have a natural instinct to stay hidden so they can be left alone for longer periods of time. Dogs, on the other hand, will feel lonely if they are left by themselves. Cats can be left at home during the day while you’re at work or gone for long periods of time on a trip without any problems. Dogs need to be taken with you, or put in a kennel, or need a pet-sitter.

Cats don’t require as much training as dogs

Cats don’t require as much training as dogs do, which is a huge plus for those who find the process of teaching their pet to sit, stay, or come difficult. Other than being trained to go in a litter box (with their moms normally train them on), they don’t need to learn tricks, or how to walk on leash, or how to greet people or other pets properly.

Additionally, unlike most dog breeds who have a tendency to go outside and explore on their own volition, most cats prefer to stay indoors. This means that you won’t have to worry about them getting lost or stepping in something unpleasant.

Cats are typically quieter than dogs

Our four year old has to cover his ears when our dogs bark at something they see outside. It’s loud! I’ve never seen him have to hold his ears because the cats were meowing too loud. They won’t bark and whine if you leave them home and so make the perfect apartment pet because they won’t disturb your neighbors like a dog may.

Barking aside, our big dogs are loud when they walk, and when they lay down. If you are on the floor beneath the one they are on, you think something fell they are so loud. Cats are so quiet when they walk you never hear them coming (that’s why we have a cat bell on the kitten.

Cats don’t track in as much mud and dirt

One of the best things about owning a cat is that they don’t track mud and dirt in like a dog does. If you have hardwood floors, this is huge. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather clean up one or two paw prints from my sweet kitty then mop my whole house just because my dog got in from outside. No matter how many mats I put down, the dogs muddy paw prints prevail.

Cats have softer fur

Cats have softer fur which feels great when petting them. They also have a variety of colors and patterns, so you can find one that’s perfect for your personal style. Cats have a much lower odor than dogs, so they’re ideal for people who don’t want to smell like their pets. When you come into our house, you smell dog, not cat.

Conclusion

There you have it. Ten reasons why cats are better than dogs – for the right person. I’m needy and enjoy my dogs constant need for attention (I have three of four of them laying with me while I write). But I enjoy the cats playfulness and their independence because sometimes the neediness of the dogs is just too much. So I guess I love them both equally. Which is your preference?
